Tom Terrific S01E01 The Nasty Knight

Tom Terrific – The Complete Series
Playlist :

Tom Terrific was a serialized animated series created by the Terrytoons studio specifically for the Captain Kangaroo show which aired on CBS weekdays mornings and Saturday mornings. Gene Deitch, who was brought in to give the studio a creative kick in the pants, created the series and served as director. Deitch’s springboard for the show was a comic strip he created in 1955, “Terr’ble Thompson,” about a little boy who fancied himself as the world’s greatest hero and engaged in flights of fantasy. Deitch abandoned the strip when Terrytoons tapped him to be the studio’s creative director and he refurbished the character into Tom Terrific.

CBS’s budgets for the show were threadbare at best–backgrounds were simplified and the animation usually wasn’t even painted. But what transcended such lack of quality control were appealing heroes–Tom and his narcoleptic sidekick Mighty Manfred the Wonder Dog–and some imaginative storylines. Tom wore a funnel on his head that served as his thinking cap, and he possessed the ability to change into whatever the situation called for.

Lionel Wilson furnished all the voices for the show, and Philip Schieb provided all music–comprised mainly of banjo and accordian. Two seasons of shows–13 stories per season–were produced and replayed on Captain Kangaroo until 1961. Episodes would be replayed throughout the 60s on Captain Kangaroo, and stories would be shown in their entirety albeit in three divided segments on the Saturday Captain Kangaroo show.

Basic animation, but who cares when you're a little kid [ like I was] and Tom and Mighty Manfred was on Capt.Kangaroo. Always wanting to see what he would turn into next!

Me earliest memories are watching a 12" black and white television in the morning with Tom Terrific and Manfred the Wonder Dog. I was 3 yrs. old in 1958, yet this cartoon is my earliest, or most predominant, memory.

As someone previously commented, "The Adventures of Tom Terrific" originally aired as a segment on the "Captain Kangaroo" show. Each episode was shown in five installments, one each morning, Monday through Friday.

Thanks for the look back; so happy I grew up with these and that through the wonders of science, we're able to view good ol Tom & Manfred on our POCKET PHONES. 😐…🤔…☺️ Oh my Lord, am I ever old. 😐😑😐. This was one of my favorite series as a kid! The tongue in cheek humor wasn't lost on me and the creativity was enhanced by the simplicity of the animation. Gene Deitch was one of the founders of UPA – United Productions of America, before he went to work for Terrytoons. UPA was an animation company that formed as a result of the bitter union strikes against Disney. They really changed the course of animation and children's entertainment. Check out Deitch's comic strip; "Terr'ble Thompson" for the first seeds of this idea.

Wow, cartoons have certainly matured since then! Even as a kid, I thought this cartoon was too silly for me.

Thank-you so much for posting this series. I have been searching for this forever & up until now could only find bits & pieces. I wasn't around when this first aired, but I am a huge fan of Terrytoons. I've been going through the entire catalogue & until now this was one series that had eluded me. Than again for sharing.

I will have to second that post. Thanks for the TT Cartoons. I to was very small when they first aired on Captain Kangaroo. They were basically little Morality Tales designed to show children the correct path in life and of that I am thankful.

If this was the first Tom Terrific story, thanks for showing it. Tom Terrific was among the many Terrytoons I was seeing when I was real little. This must have been the first Terry series especially made for television.
